"Reality, when it hits you, it doesn't hesitate to tap you softly against the chest. When it hits you, it's a full blow that makes you feel like you can't breathe anymore. "
Being a nursing student is tough. I’m going through clinical practices right now and there’s a lot that you have to experience. It’s nothing to complain about obviously, but it’s great to have a hands on experience. I’m placed in a long term care facility, and today I realized how sad it is hearing some of the things the residents say. A lot of them are just waiting for the Lord to take them.. and some of them are prepared to die and most of them are coded as a DNR. It’s sad, really. When given the option to have a second chance at living, they refuse. But who could blame them right? I’m sure all of them have said and done what they need to in their lives and they feel complete and at rest and they’re only waiting for their time to come. It’s makes my heart feel pretty heavy when I visit their rooms and see the many pictures of them and their families. So many memories within each of their rooms and you can’t help but wonder what kind of life did they live? As a nurse I know you’re supposed to set aside your emotions, but it’s quite a struggle. Especially when you compare your resident’s current state to the many memories within their pictures.
